Creative Critical Reflection: Conventions and Representation of Social Groups & Issues
How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups and issues? (This response taken a previous post will be condensed for this post)
We follow the story of a teenager who has lost his mother to gang violence and territorialism. The story is not per say about him, but it is about combating the flawed nature of the selfish, immoral, and overbearing gangsters of today, in contrast to the past, where people stood up for what they believed in, rather than being a part of a bandwagon. You can think back to the riots during the reign of N.W.A. where they were protesting for their rights to speak freely about their daily lives in a country against African-Americans.
Yes, there are popular gangs that you can strive to join for the glory and pride of being a part of that group, but what is it for? Keeping a name that is not positive in society for unjustifiable reasons is definitely madness. The killings that occur with psychopaths have happened with gangs as well. But gang activity is so common and small today that it is overlooked and when a group decides that it wants to regain power for its namesake, they do unfathomably odious deeds.
On the other side of the coin, on the ground level, people that band together to lead their own crusades and punish the community are often answered with no resistance, by the government and those that are discriminated against are left to struggle and face a new adversity.
No one individual is to blame.
This time everyone is at fault. No ethnic group or sexuality is to blame for the negative impact that plagued the country and then the world, it is everyone; this includes our protagonist.
